A Catholic View of Economics
from COOPERATORES VERITATIS
He eloquently covers the bases on Catholic Social Teaching and that mysterious and arcane science we call economics. From the top:
A close observance of the influence of economics will reveal that its importance is more than superficial. Economic activity, commonly understood as the means through which goods and services are exchanged, is a part of man’s social nature, and thus a part of human nature. Therefore, in order to achieve true economic prosperity, not just superficial appearances of it, it has to be conducted in a manner that adheres to the truth of human nature.
Since it is her duty to bear witness to Jesus Christ, who is the fullness of the truth of God and man, the Catholic Church views the issue of economics as one of paramount importance, as Sacred Scripture and Catholic social teaching attests.
He continues the discussion, covering all of the basic principles of CST and showing how it relates to economic matters. Catholic Social Teaching recognizes that we are in the world, even when we're not of it. The Body of Christ does not live on bread alone, but it does live on bread. Understanding our role as God the Father's redeemed children in Christ Jesus, we're able to pursue our proper role in an economy that honors the dignity of the human person and places itself at the service of the neediest. CST provides the principles that determine the best end of an economy in the light of Christ, as well as the best means to pursue that end. It addresses the reality that we are neither sovereign individuals nor dependents of a collective. We are human persons that live in relationship to one another and in Communion with God through his Church, whether we know it or not, and assuming we haven't thrown such communion away. As such, we must put on the mind of Christ when we consider how to live. This includes how we live economically and order our societal lives socially and politically. CST provides the insight as to what Christ teaches us about living these important matters with integrity.
Mr. Mockeridge presents an eloquent column these matters. Read his whole post. It's worth it!
