A Reasonable Elite Bows to a Fool!

Representative Chris Smith refused to give up. He asked senior adviser to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Mark Malloch Brown, the same question again. Finally, the senior advisor to Mr. Annan, the great hope of all Reasonable Internationalists, caved. Catholic World News has the story:

In an unusual exchange this week in the US Congress, a high-ranking UN officials admitted that the term "reproductive health," does not include abortion, the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) reports.

During a hearing of the US House Committee on International Relations, Rep. Chris Smith questioned Mark Malloch Brown, a senior adviser to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Rep. Smith asked Brown three times if the term "reproductive health"-- as used in the Millennium Summit Declaration recently approved by the UN-- implied access to abortion. Brown finally admitted that it did not.

The Millennium Summit Declaration, decided two weeks ago after more than a year of negotiations, calls for "universal access to reproductive health by the year 2015." Pro-abortion forces at the UN prefer that these terms remain undefined, so that they can be interpreted broadly later on. Though the UN has never officially defined "reproductive health" as including abortion, UN agencies and powerful non-government organizations interpret the term as including abortion, and use it to pressure governments to lift restrictions on the practice.

The pro-aborts scream in horror! No longer will they use the UN's ambiguity to cover their tracks. They can't pressure reluctant governments into supporting institutional murder by appealing to the UN's "reproductive health" commitment anymore. To put it in football parlance, Representative Smith forced Mr. Brown to fumble the ball into the hands of the pro-life!
