Dispatches from the Front

Professor Phil Mitchell taught at the same University as the contraversial Ward Churchill of "9/11 victims-are-little-eichmanns" fame. He was fired, then rehired, then told he can't teach history after the summer of 2006. Unfortunately, his story is becoming a common one across the nation:

a recent study shows that the only freedom of thought that really exists on campus is "to believe the dominant political ideology. Other ideologies are marginalized." (Klein and Stern [PDF])

As for Professor Mitchell, he's had enough. He's getting out of Dodge. I can't blame him. I remember when he appeared on the O'Reilly Factor when his firing first became public. He told the story of how a collegue in his own department told him that "If I had my way, I'd put all of you (Christians) in camps," Wonderful place to work.

As he says:

"The truth is, universities are the most hostile, narrow-minded and intolerant environment in society,"

Nothing lasts forever, however, even totalitarian progressive ideologies. People like Keith Thompson , who called themselves liberals in the 1950s and '60s, are jumping ship. His reason: Progressivism has caused many on the left to become unhinged:

Susan Sontag cleared her throat for the "courage" of the al Qaeda pilots. Norman Mailer pronounced the dead of Sept. 11 comparable to "automobile statistics." The events of that day were likely premeditated by the White House, Gore Vidal insinuated. Noam Chomsky insisted that al Qaeda at its most atrocious generated no terror greater than American foreign policy on a mediocre day.

If more follow him, there may be cause to hope. Fools are born anew every day.
