Baptists Confessions on Bibles and Catholics

The Great Bard of the North offers this fascinating insight. A Baptist Blogger sees the greatest synthesis of "biblical scholarship and pastoral instruction" accomplished by none other than the Roman Catholic Church!
I really question whether any Evangelical denomination would have the ecclesial resources to put together a work [Pontifical Biblical Commission's The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church] of this kind of sophistication. If they did, no doubt the eyes of many pastors would simply glaze over in the attempt to read it. In the Evangelical world, the church and the academy operate in separate realms (which is why Christian apologetics is in such a sorry state), whereas in the Roman Catholic Church, the academy is able to serve as a help to the Church. Though this does not always work that way, the structures are at least in place to enable it to do so.

One quote from the document I found extremely perceptive, and that is in its comments about the hermeneutics of Fundamentalism: “The basic problem with fundamentalist interpretation of this kind is that, refusing to take into account the historical character of biblical revelation, it makes itself incapable of accepting the full truth of the incarnation itself.
Fools complementing fools: It's always a pleasure to report such findings. I expect to see more of it. As more and more Reasonable folk show less and less patience for Fools that continue to take Christ seriously, we'll need unity. As Benjamin Franklin has said, "We must all hang together, or we'll all hang seperately."

I'm honored that a Baptist blogger would defend the reputation of the Catholic Church while simultaneously observing a blindspot in his own breatheren. Only someone with great integerity and keen perception makes such insightful assertions. My hat's off to him!
