Right before my penance is imposed, he says, "Look, the name of the game here is that this earthly reality is only a split second compared to eternity. So, you have to do everything you can to grow in relationship with God to reach that eternity. Most people think that confession just wipes the slate clean, but its so much more than that.

Confession is a sacrament of healing. Anyone that suffers from a chronic condition knows that healing is life-long work. Confession, while a crucial part of that, also becomes a milestone on the journey. The doctor can prescribe the medicine. The patient is the one that has to take it.

Living our penance--and then living in the fullness of our repentence and newly-given Grace--is how we take the prescription given us through Confession by The Physician.
